The Bhagavad Gita is unquestionably one of the most important sacred texts in the world. It tells the tale of the warrior Arjuna; before the start of a great battle between good and evil, he engages in a philosophical debate with his charioteer, who is in fact the Hindu god Krishna in disguise. Mortality and reincarnation, the caste system and social responsibility, family loyalty and spiritual devotion are all explained and discussed. This is a classic that has stood the test of twenty-three centuries.

This translation by Graham M. Schweig is loyal to the original. With phonetic spelling of Sanskrit words and ample annotations, it is accessible to scholars and laypeople alike.

Graham M. Schweig received his doctorate from Harvard University, and specializes in the religious traditions of India and comparative mysticisms. His translations of ancient texts include Dance of Divine Love: The Råsa Lîlå of Krishna and the Cowherd Maidens of Vraja from the Bhågavata Puråna (Princeton, 2005) and The Bhakti Sütra: Concise Teachings of Nårada on Devotional Love (Columbia, 2005). He is also Senior Editor of The Journal of Vaishnava Studies, and is presently Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Christopher Newport University and Visiting Associate Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Virginia. Schweig resides with his family in Newport News, VA.

"Schweig's most obvious innovation is his determination to capture the poetry of the Sanskrit, which other translations inadequately relay ... [E]xtremely reader friendly, particularly if you have little or no prior exposure to the Gita. "
