Innocent, elegant, ethereally fragile in her beauty, Audrey Hepburn stood alone among the actresses of her time. From the very first moment of her fame in Roman Holiday, through the triumphs of Charade, My Fair Lady, and Breakfast at Tiffany's, her screen presence was unique. She was, in the words of her costar Gregory Peck, "a magical combination of high chic and high spirits." Yet this was Audrey Hepburn's story: fighting against the odds to maintain that high-chic appearance (in the face of grueling diet regimens and eating disorders) and those high spirits (in the face of a life tainted by romantic pain, and a past tainted with family Nazi associations that could never, under any circumstances, be revealed).
