Canada's largest used book store just got a lot bigger.

Russell Books is adding about 50,000 volumes to its shelves over the next few weeks -- double the usual order as the business owned by the DePol family beefs up for the Christmas shopping season.

Manager Jordan Minter said Russell got a deal when its Vancouver supplier changed warehouses and liquidated new stock rather than move it. The shipment ranges from children's books to fiction titles and the 1,250 boxes on 51 skids filled four trucks.

Russell took over the closed dollar store on Fort Street near Blanshard to sort and catalogue the load.

The family is literally raising the roof in its main building at 734 Fort St., with Chad DePol patiently lifting the false ceiling to provide roof-to-floor shelving.

Combined with two upper floors on Fort Street and its Books on View site, Russell has an inventory of more than a million books and employs 25 people.

December is the company's biggest revenue month, said Minter.
